A few days ago we find out that pligg is for sale. Now we find out the price for it: $150k. Seems that this price is for domain name (evaluated at $5k) and pligg’s community of 10,000 users. That means we have $15 for each user.

john joins itunes

It’s about John Lennon who joins the iTunes Store today. According to Apple, 16 of John Lennon’s solo works are online through iTunes.

Thursday, Google announced that it is offering additional capacity at a price for storing additional e-mail and digital photos. The new storage option works with two Google products – Picassa Web Albums and Gmail and soon at that list it will be added Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

 In 2004, when Google first began offering storage, the limit was 1 GB. That figure doubled in 2005, and is currently at the 2.8 GB mark. According to their new plan, the cheapest option is for 20$ – 6G of space, and the options are growing to 500$ – 250 G.

 Why to pay for Gmail? There is other option: Yahoo! which is offering unlimited storage. And it looks better than Gmail.

Pligg for sale

Pligg, originally named menéame in Spanish, is a web application that allows you to submit an article that will be reviewed by all and will be promoted, based on popularity, to the main page. When a user submits a news article it will be placed in the “unpublished” area until it gains sufficient votes to be promoted to the main page. The original source for Pligg was authored by Ricardo Galli. He was influenced by the extremely popular English technology site digg.com.
The admins sent a statement about the sale to Mashable today:

They say all good things must come to an end, but in this case it might just be the beginning. In a bold move, just before the release of our next version, Pligg CMS has decided to sell the business side of pligg. What once started as a rag tag group of rouge open source developers a year and a half ago, today has become one of the hottest Content Management System software used today. Pligg is used by sites such as VH1’s Best Week Ever, VideoSift.com, Sk-rt.com, Indianpad.com, RealEstateVoices.com, PlantChange.com, AgentB.com and Rocketboom. The Google search for “powered by pligg” shows an astounding figure of over 2,410,000 results.
The decision to sell the business end of Pligg just made sense. The community has grown larger than ever expected, with just over 10,000 registered webmasters sharing and trading tips, over 60,000 Sourceforge downloads, 2 IRC rooms that are active 24/7. It’s become an extremely large community to manage. We all have day jobs.
We’ve seen many businesses develop around pligg recently, selling everything from custom templates, and modules, to support, and installation. This is a clear example that with the proper team in place, pligg.com could easily dominate the other markets in this area.
Pligg.com has been added to sedo and open for negotiations . This sale includes the pligg.com domain along with all web content created for the site including graphic design work, blog and forum administrator accounts, rights to the Sourceforge.net account and the Pligg CMS code.

If you want to look through Cornell University you can do it for free because some of their content will become available to everyone, thanks to an arrangement with Google’s Library Project. Not all the library’s content will be made available, due to copyright restrictions. Only texts that are out-of-copyright will be made completely available for online access, and everything else will be scanned for basic info, similar to what you’ll find on Amazon, along with information on where the book can be purchased or borrowed.

A recent study made by University of Texas in collaboration with Chitika shows that 50k blogs from the internet generated $5 millions from ad in 2006.
How they do it? They took the Chitika revenue from more than 12.000 publishers, assumed that every blogger have 3 source of revenue, they estimated the total revenue multiplying Chitika revenue by 3.

Using Chitika revenue numbers from 2006 and assuming that bloggers will, on average, diversify across. 3 revenue sources, and assuming that they will typically try out other sources that will generate similar revenue streams, it is safe to estimate that the total estimated revenue for their blog will be at least 3 times the revenue attained through Chitika. With the sample data set, (BlogID, Rank, 2006 Revenue) standard statistical predictive modeling techniques (in this case, the specific regression model used was a variant of the Pareto model) were used to estimate the advertising revenue earned by blogs across all ranks.


The study came to that summary of findings:

Ad revenue in a blog is more sensitive to the rank of the blog than what ne would expect in a typical Zipf Law 80/20 curve situation. One reason for this may be the ocial value of advertising in a blog. If online advertising is like advertising in a mall, advertising n the blogosphere is like advertising in a country club.
